Today's Sunday - we arrived here on Tuesday. We visited friends, various family members, hung out with Mike and Lynn, did some touring on our own. With all those activities, it seems, time gets expanded. Leaving Brooklyn, early Tuesday morning, feels like weeks ago.
Wednesday morning, our second day in L.A. we set out on our own. The tour magazine in our hotel room was hyping Melrose Avenue as a hip new strip. So being hipsters, not hippies, we set out on a several-mile walk on the touted section of that road. We parked our car at 10 o'clock and began a long walk. We were disappointed. It was too early and most shops didn't open, it seems, till 11 or 12. But we weren't missing much; the hipness alluded to was for the 20-something-crowd not for us, the close-to-60'ers.

Tennessee in California - who cares, it's pulled pork - yum!
After lunch at a barbecue place nearby on La Brea Avenue aptly called The Pig, we headed over to Fairfax to inspect the La Brea Tar Pits. I've always been fascinated by childhood Viewmaster slides that depicted saber-toothed tigers ensnared in gooey asphalt gurgling up from the earth's core. We weren't disappointed. There were the actual pits, still active, still gooey and bubbly (fenced in so we humans wouldn't get trapped and turned into future fossils). And the George Page Museum with interesting displays of reconstructed tigers, bears, mammoths and sloths of ice-age times. Even a "hands-on" tub of tar with pipes to be pulled up upon to demonstrate just how sticky the tar pits were ... and they were!

The museum at the La Brea Par Tits.

La Brea Tar Pits ... mommy sinking. (Note: cars out on the street in the background were not present back then).
We were tired (as always) - we had walked Melrose for a long while and then did the Tar Pits in the afternoon and that was quite enough for a day. Dinner on our second night was with my cousin Muriel and her husband, Ken. They took us for a lovely meal at Taix, a French restaurant on Sunset, in the interesting and funky Echo Park neighborhood.
.....
In my next post - a visit to Redondo Beach with another Matt. Stay tuned, OK?

Hi guys. Sounds like you are having a great time. By the way Matt, your caption under the museum picture has a missspelled word (the last one) in it. Was that intentional? Cheers! Mort
