A Visit To Fire Island - Part II

July 21, 2005

Thursday was our next day (and last) on Fire Island. We took a water taxi eastward to the bustling town (it's the only town that bustles) of Ocean Beach. This is the commercial center of the island and it has hotels, restaurants, bars, clothing shops and the other accoutrements of a real, functioning town. Because of the hotels and bars, it has less families and more transients - day hoppers - over for a day or two of fun at the beach and partying at night.

All aboard the water taxi - these boats really move!

We disembarked our taxi which had transported us from the very quiet and family-oriented locale of Marlo's house in Fair Harbor to the busy town of Ocean Beach. It was a very hot day and we sought out a restaurant, McGuires, which had a nice menu and a deck with a bayview and bay breezes on which to dine.

Alexis communicates with civilization.

My bro - hot as we walked the streets of Ocean Beach.

After lunch we took the taxi back and headed for a few hours on the beach - that's basically what you do on Fire Island. So if you don't like the beach or if you're keeping tabs on exposure to the sun, this is not the place to spend time. The flip side of that is the ultimate and quiet destination for a place to unwind, relax and let the time slip away like grains of sand in an hourglass.

Chained at the docks - wagons to cart your weekend mainland shopping to your beach house. Note the "Lorenz" wagon - the offical cart of Marlo and Malte Lorenz!

This is how you wile away your time on F.I. Bring some good books.

My foot, a blimp, the umbrella and the ocean -- odd combination. You could tell I'm bored.

When we returned to the house it was time to think about dinner and a late ferry ride back to the mainland and then home. Dinner was to be local tonight and that meant Le Dock, the only show in town. As a bonus, the Lorenz family in its entirety would be joining us. We were leaving - they were coming.

Dinner was lovely - we sat outside, Fire Islanders strolled by, people arrived and departed by ferry and we dined as the sun set in front of our table. Quite a lovely way to end our two days on Fire Island. We certainly will return.

Olivia arrives and greets her grandma and pa.

I couldn't photograph Luke - on arrival he was gone! Olivia stayed and posed.

Walking to dinner before leaving. Sunsets are beautiful on Fire Island.

Good bye Marlo and thanks!
